Terra’s Is the Gluten Free Ice Cream Shop I Didn’t Know I Was Waiting For

When you eat strictly gluten free, ordering ice cream is rarely just ordering ice cream. There’s the question about the cones. The question about the scoop. The question about whether the brownie bits live in the same freezer as everything else. Then there’s the polite smile while someone goes to check with the back.

At Terra’s, I didn’t ask a single question. Everything in the building is gluten free.

I’ve been twice now. I’m going back today.

A dedicated kitchen changes everything

Terra’s is a 100% gluten free facility. The ice cream, the bakery case, the sandwiches, even the waffle cones, which they make in house. There are dairy free options too. For anyone with celiac or anyone who eats gluten free strictly, that means you can point at the case and simply say “that one.” It’s a small freedom, but it feels enormous.

The ice cream

A cup or waffle cone with three flavors runs about $9 plus tax, and the servings are huge; plan to share, or plan to commit.

My favorites so far are the Cinnamon, the Triple Chocolate Brownie and the plain Chocolate. I’d happily order any of them again.

Cookies and Cream deserves its own moment. If you’ve been gluten free for a while, you know it’s one of the first flavors you quietly let go of. Here it’s back on the menu, and it’s delicious.

The Strawberry is creamy and lovely. The Pistachio has a milder flavor, but is generous with the pistachios.

Next up on my list to try are the ice cream sandwiches!

The bakery case

The cranberry scone was a real scone. Not overly buttery, with exactly the texture a scone should have. The pumpkin scone had great flavor, though it ate more like pumpkin bread than a scone. That’s not a complaint, just a heads up if you’re after the classic crumble. There is a large variety of baked goods, and I haven’t even made a dent.

Good to know

Terra’s is a full service café, with coffee and sandwiches alongside the sweets. You can take pints of ice cream home, along with bags of their home-made cone triangles. They also make ice cream cakes, plus plain vanilla or chocolate sponge cakes to order. I’ve already asked about one for my birthday.

The verdict

For a gluten free eater, luxury is not having to ask. Terra’s understands that, and the ice cream is good enough that you’d go even if you didn’t need to. You may be surprised to find that nothing is labeled GLUTEN FREE. There’s a video about the owners and origin story playing on a huge screen on repeat and they mention it in there, but other than that they don’t mention it. I had to ask to be sure the first time I went.
